Japanese Money

May 6, 2001

, Welcome to our website. We are Danny, age 7; and Kayli, age 5. We are going to Japan for our first time. We are traveling with our Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa from Syracuse NY, and our uncle Kenny from Boston MA. Our dog Muffy is not going with us, she's sleeping over at her friend Caspian's house in our neighborhood.

We would like to show you pictures of places we visit and things we see, so you too can see what Japan looks like. Tokyo, Hakone, Osaka and Kamakura are cities and towns that we plan to go to. We're going to visit an old Samurai castle. We'll get to ride on a Shinkansen, which is a high speed bullet train. We may visit a place called "Palette Town" but our mom says it has nothing to do with Pokemon.

Although we've never been there, we do know that everyone there speaks Japanese, they use a different kind of writing, and like most of the world, they use the metric system to measure things. Temperature is how many degrees Celsius instead of how many degrees Fahrenheit. Weight is in kilograms instead of pounds, and they use centimeters instead of inches. Japanese money is different too. They have coins and paper money like us but they don't use dollars ($) and cents, they use yen. Click here to see what Japanese money looks like. The symbol for yen looks like this or this . Today, one dollar, or 100 cents is equal to about 122 yen.

Hopefully, if our Mom and Uncle Kenny can figure how to get online from Japan, we'll be able to put pictures on our web site.
